Remix Presentation

As the first presenter of my class, I researched an artist that is very creative and imaginative. He is a photographer who manipulates his photos to create new artworks. Dan Escobar is his name. This artist works with different medias to create a remixed product, similar to what we will be doing in class, and what I have done for my first mini assignment. I hope you enjoy my presentation, and learning more about Dan.

Blog Post 2: Discussing Article

In this blog entry I will be discussing an article called The Web is Dead. Long Live the Internet that is found here: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1
This article talks about how the generation of the 18 year old web has grown old, as people move on to faster, easier, and more flashy new objects of interest. Objects such as apps, RSS feeds, online gaming and movie services (xbox live and netflix), and IM conversations (such as skype and msn), which are more appealing to people today than the web could ever be.
In my opinion, I am shocked to see that the whole web generation that I grew up getting to know, has gone as quickly as it arrived. I for one can and cannot vouch for the rising of the internet. In some cases, I put my foot down to the fast approaching technologies that have sucked everyone else in. With the arrival of Xbox live, twitter, iPads and apps, and other new technologies that I may not even be aware of, I find myself losing faith in humanity, and what it has come to now. There was a point in time, where I was interested in the new flashy internet services and products, but after a while I grew tired of chasing down whats 'hip' and 'now', because who knows...in a few years there will be something even better out. I will admit that I enjoy instant messaging on my MSN, and going on facebook now and again, but that is where I draw the line. I hate the fact that everything can come right to your fingertips (ie. services on your phone, ipod and ipad, xbox live). I'd rather wait until I get home to go onto the web, than get my facebook updates on my cell phone. I feel that there is a sense of chaos when anything is accessible from your fingertips. Too much hustle and bustle to find out the latest news, updates, hypes, and information. People need to take a deep breath and realise what is going on here.

The information-based web age is quickly dying to provide for a simple and easy internet age. We aren't machines, so why follow? We need to stop letting commercialism take control of our brains, and bring back html and the web.

Short Movie

Here is the mini assignment that I did in iMovie. I wanted to tell a short story of the horses of Sable Island, that I talked about in my first blog post (with the artist of Robert Dutesco). In iMovie I used simple cropping tools and transitions to layout clips from two sources. Then I added audio imported from youtube, and edited that to make it fit the movie as suited. I also added dialogue and edited the clips further (slow motion), to create the quality that I was aiming for in my video.

I hope you enjoy the short movie. Here it is:

First Small Remix Project

What is a remix? A remix is when you modify a peice of media by altering it in some way. In this case, I am altering one image by introducing seperate pictures. I will make it seem as though these pictures were meant to be in the main image, by mixing (through photoshop tools) the many pictures together.

In this particular remix, we were asked to create a photo that defines us as a person. For my remix, I wanted to include images that create or have created who I am. I used a kitchen as my background image, because that is where I spend most of my days. I love to bake and feel useful, and being in the kitchen makes me feel at home. The images I included in the kitchen were seperate objects that create me or that I love. The images I added to this photo were an apple, car keys, a horse picture in a frame, a cake, a camera, and an orange tabby cat.
The reasons for my choices are as follows:
The apple represents my goals to become a teacher.
The car keys are there to show my love for driving and going on adventures.
A horse picture in a frame is there to show how much I love nature, and horses in particular. The frame was added around it to show that I have an appreciation for art.
There is a cake on the counter to show my hobby of cake decorating and baking.
The camera was added to represent my love for photographing life.
Lastly, the orange tabby cat is there to represent my loving relationship with pets, and my cat Max.

Blog Post 1: An Inspiring Artist

The artist that inspires me is not so much favourited because of his name (like Monet or Salvador Dali) but because of his moving photographs. His name is Roberto Dutesco, and he has a passion for capturing the natural beauty of the world. In his gallery, you will find abstract photos of purely natural elements, from flowers, sand and rocks, to the wild horses of sable island. His abstract photos allow you to see the world from a different view. I love this about Roberto. He allows me to observe a palm tree as more than just an object. The palm trees become textured, flowing, and twisted to be seen as a natural gift of the world. My favourite gallery and works of this photographer are the ones of wild horses. He observes the horses from a distance, without disturbing their natural surroundings, and is able to capture their beauty flawlessly. Some of the elements of his wild horse photographs show a sense of age, curiousity, dominance, love, respect, and new life. These works all inspire me to have more respect for the nature around us and all that we have been given. He makes me want to cherish every moment of my life, and to capture the beauty that passes me by. You will notice that some of my works will reflect themes from this artist in the future.
